Welcome Back Dear Reader,

This blog is a good opportunity to let you know a little bit more about myself.  You will pick some things up as you read the blog, but certain aspects of my life may need to be divulged during the life of this platform.  One thing that does not bother me is what other people think of me.  I tend to buck the trends of conformity and living to please others, what is the point of life if you are living it for someone else’s pleasure and enjoyment?  The big thing about that is a freedom to love whomever I would like to love, or love to love, or love to like, or like to like…use which ever set of words you would like to describe loving someone.

Way back in 1614, the first recorded interracial marriage took place between John Rolfe and Pocahontas.  There were even tax incentives and cash stipends proposed by Patrick Henry to encourage marriage between the white settlements and the Indian settlements.  President Thomas Jefferson pleaded with Americans to consider intermingling between the two settlements.  Now, you can only imagine how this went, I am certain there were more people against interracial relationships than for them.  The fact that there had to be encouragement and “rewards” tied to this opportunity shows the unwillingness to take part.  Now, encouragement and “rewards” shows another sign that a good portion of relationships may have been initiated for the wrong reasons.

A huge contradiction took place in 1661 in Virginia, the state I was born and raised in, the state that I married in, and the state I raise my children in.  Virginia passed legislation that prohibited interracial marriages and they even passed a law that prohibited ministers from performing marriages for interracial couples.  There was a ten-thousand-pound tobacco fine associated with the violation of these sets of legislation.  Things did not get better as the U.S. progressed into the 1700s.  Maryland legislature became even more stringent in 1715 and 1717 as they prohibited any white person from cohabitation with a person of African descent.

Really let this sink in, let all the horrors of the past sink in.  All this hate and disdain was because of the color of someone’s skin or where they came from.  That is absolutely silly and ignorant.  There is nothing more asinine and immature than looking differently at someone because of where they were born or the shade of their skin.  We are all humans, we all have the same working parts, and we are all uniquely different in good ways.  Imagine how boring life would be if we all came from the same place and had the same exact experiences.  Sounds like a nightmare that we can never awaken from.

If I were alive in the 1600s or 1700s, I would have been paying fines out of the ass.  My wife is black, I am white, and we have children together.  She is the absolute love of my life, same with the kids, just a different type of love (insert laughing here).  My life would not be the same without my children or my wife.  They keep me grounded, they give me motivation, they give me a purpose greater than myself.  Life takes on an entirely new meaning when you have children.  Even if you are the most selfish person in the world, you must let some of that selfishness leave your mind.  Once you have brought a child into this world, you should reassess your purpose in life and channel some of that motivation that pushed you to do better, make more money, help people, and redirect it into your family.

Open your eyes, look deep inside yourself, and really think about the type of person you are and want to be.  Are you living life how you would like, or do you treat it with a certain regard that you keep internalized just so you won’t be seen as an outcast or conformist?

We are all different.  Mentally, physically, all of us are truly different from one another.  There is nothing wrong with that, not one bit.  It is this uniqueness that keeps the world going around, keeps us spinning through space on this rock.

            Don’t forget that.
